  OVERVIEW
  Whispering Canopy is a remote eco-retreat and wilderness education centre built among the towering trees of the Olympic National Forest. The retreat was designed before the Fall around sustainability, environmental education, extended wilderness stays and minimal disturbance of the forest floor.
  
  Almost all major occupied and working areas are elevated above ground level. The lodge, cabins, boardwalks, greenhouses, vegetable-growing platforms and animal enclosures stand among the trunks and lower canopy rather than on cleared ground. Heights vary with the terrain, generally placing the inhabited level around 12–25 feet above the forest floor.
  
  The Fall began in late August 2010. By the time Wayfarer reaches Whispering Canopy in mid-December 2010, roughly three and a half months have passed. Despite the severe shortage of labour, the retreat still looks recognisably like the functioning eco-retreat it was before civilisation collapsed rather than a purpose-built post-apocalyptic settlement.
