Whispering Canopy

Hidden among the trees is a place built to live with the forest, rather than conquer it.
Whispering Canopy began as a privately operated eco-retreat and wilderness education centre deep within Washington's Olympic National Forest.
Long before the Fall, it had been designed to survive isolation, storms, power interruptions and difficult road access.
Water systems, renewable energy, food stores, workshops, greenhouses, livestock facilities and accommodation were already part of the retreat.
After civilisation collapsed, those same systems gave Whispering Canopy something few places still possessed: a chance.

Location & Isolation
Whispering Canopy lies beyond the small forest locality of Crescent Grove on Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
A maintained forest road once allowed coaches, supply trucks, emergency vehicles and maintenance vehicles to reach the retreat.
The road ends at the primary vehicle gate. A secondary emergency gate connects with an alternate forestry and service route.
The entire developed retreat sits inside a secured perimeter, although a broad belt of natural woodland remains between much of the fence and the occupied centre.
From many areas within Whispering Canopy, even its own perimeter disappears behind dense forest.
Life Above the Forest Floor
Whispering Canopy was deliberately designed to minimise disruption to the forest beneath it.
Most occupied areas stand approximately 12 to 25 feet above ground, depending upon the natural terrain.
Accommodation sits among the trunks and lower canopy rather than on cleared ground.
Wide timber walkways connect accommodation, agriculture, utilities and communal spaces.
Ramps allow supplies, carts and people with limited mobility to move through the settlement.
Reinforced gently graded routes allow livestock to reach elevated animal areas.

The Main Lodge is the heart of Whispering Canopy.
It serves as the primary gathering, dining, administration and communal space for the settlement.

Accommodation is distributed throughout the forest rather than concentrated in one large building.
Additional emergency sleeping space can be created in communal areas, but beds are not the true limit on Whispering Canopy's population.
Food, labour, medical needs, winter supplies and maintenance determine how many people can actually remain here safely.
Water & Stream
A year-round mountain stream passes directly through the secured property beneath the elevated settlement.
Independent freshwater supply.
Water treatment provides safe stored drinking water.
Stored water creates redundancy during failures.
Water, irrigation, fishing and power-generation potential.
Power
Whispering Canopy was off-grid before the Fall.
Electricity is conserved. Water systems, refrigeration, communications, medical needs and essential lighting receive priority.
Greenhouses & Food Production
Even Whispering Canopy's agricultural infrastructure is elevated.
Large reinforced platforms hold deep soil beds, while several greenhouse structures allow protected and extended-season growing.
Growing infrastructure alone does not make the settlement self-sufficient. Agriculture must be combined with livestock, stored food, hunting and fishing.

It is a capable first-aid centre — but it is not a hospital and cannot provide full surgical or advanced diagnostic care.

Keeping a remote settlement functioning requires far more than food and shelter.
Food Stores & Preservation
Whispering Canopy maintained substantial winter stores because severe weather could isolate the retreat even before the Fall.
Flour, rice, oats, pasta, beans, lentils, sugar and baking supplies.
Canned foods, soups, fruit, vegetables, sauces and preserves.
Frozen meat, fish, vegetables, berries, butter and perishables.
Potatoes, onions, winter squash, apples and other produce.
Whispering Canopy's isolation required it to prepare for winter road closures long before the world ended.
By the time Wayfarer reaches the retreat, substantial reserves of food, livestock feed, maintenance supplies, winter clothing and emergency equipment remain.
Approximately 35,000 litres of liquid fuel remain protected in the service area, predominantly diesel with a smaller petrol reserve.
These supplies do not make the settlement inexhaustible. They provide time — enough time to establish routines, stabilise agriculture and livestock, and prepare for spring.
Fire Protection
Fire is one of Whispering Canopy's greatest environmental threats.
Timber construction and dense surrounding forest made fire safety a priority even before the Fall.
Perimeter & Security
Whispering Canopy's fence existed before the Fall, but it was originally intended for guest safety, livestock protection, wildlife management and controlled access rather than war.
Walker-specific reinforcement is a post-Fall adaptation rather than part of the original retreat design.
Wayfarer
Whispering Canopy eventually becomes the destination of Brielle Anders' westbound convoy.
Evelyn knew of the retreat from professional visits before the Fall. She remembered its general layout, agricultural programme, livestock facilities, water systems and self-sufficient infrastructure.
The group had no way of knowing whether the road remained open.
They did not know whether the retreat's systems still worked.
They did not know whether animals or supplies remained.
They did not even know whether anyone still lived there.
When the convoy finally reaches Whispering Canopy, the retreat initially appears almost impossibly intact.
The fence remains standing. Water continues to flow. Renewable power still functions. Animals remain in their enclosures. Lights may still be visible through the trees.
But the settlement is not empty.
Only five of Whispering Canopy's original residents remain when Wayfarer arrives.
They have kept the essential systems operating, maintained parts of the growing areas and cared for the surviving animals, but five people cannot properly maintain a site this large.
Shortly before the convoy arrives, illness spreads among them.
By the time Wayfarer reaches the property, all five are infected but none has yet turned.
Their remaining time allows them to pass on something more valuable than supplies: knowledge of the retreat, its systems, its animals, its routines and the work required to keep it alive.
Whispering Canopy is not simply abandoned and claimed by the newcomers. Its final residents have the opportunity to entrust the retreat — and everything required to care for it — to those who have finally reached its gates.
A New Community
The arrival of Wayfarer changes Whispering Canopy immediately.
Where five exhausted residents could barely maintain the retreat, a much larger population brings the labour and specialist skills required to reopen cabins, restore agricultural systems, organise livestock, maintain the perimeter and prepare for winter.
Wayfarer's convoy itself becomes part of the settlement's infrastructure. Vehicles are no longer kept in immediate escape formation; those not required for scouting, hunting, emergencies or essential supply work can be winterised to conserve fuel.
Whispering Canopy has shelter, water, power, livestock, equipment and stored supplies.
What it needs now is people willing to maintain them.
