Mission:
Safe Harbor
Location: Leah’s Farmstead
Timeline: October 7th 2010, Late afternoon
The sun had nearly vanished beyond the trees when Kira began growling. Low. Deep. Wrong. Amy looked up instantly. Across the pasture, Brutus had already stopped moving. Rigid. Watching the tree line. The entire herd shifted uneasily. Tilly stamped once. Atlas lifted his massive head. Then came the sound. Branches snapping. One.
Then another. Then dozens. Austin was first to react.
“Movement.”
Amy was already moving toward the fence. Her stomach dropped.
Figures. Too many. Shambling through the trees beyond the western pasture. Twenty. Thirty. More still coming behind them. Patrick swore quietly. Andrew stared.
“Oh no…”
The herd reacted immediately.
Low panicked calls rolling through fifteen head of cattle.
The goats began pulling against their enclosure in the livestock wagon. The chickens erupted into frantic noise beneath the livestock wagon canvas.
Amy turned. “Move!”
Everyone scattered instantly. Harness teams rushed toward the wagons.
Austin grabbed Tilly’s lead rope. Andrew moved for Bramble. Briar sprinted toward the livestock wagon. The entire clearing exploded into movement. But Amy saw the truth immediately.
They weren’t ready. Not fast enough. The wagons needed minutes.
The herd needed calming. And the walkers were already crossing the pasture fence. Too close.
Far too close. If the cattle panicked now— Everything ended here.
Pine Hollow ended here.
Then Elena spoke. Quietly. Behind her. “Amy.”
Amy turned. Elena stood beside the farmhouse porch. Paler than usual.
Barely standing. But calm. Far too calm.
“No.” Amy knew that look immediately. “No.”
Elena smiled sadly. “You know exactly what I’m thinking.”
“No.”
“You need time.”
“We can all move.”
Elena shook her head gently. “No.”
Amy stepped toward her. “We are not leaving you.”
Elena’s eyes softened. “Oh sweetheart…” She reached out and cupped Amy’s face. The same way mothers were supposed to. The way Amy barely remembered. “I was dying before I found you.”
Amy’s eyes burned instantly. “No.”
“You gave me three more months.”
Behind them, the walkers were already breaking through the outer fencing. Austin shouted something. Patrick yelled for help near the feed wagon. The cattle were beginning to panic. Time was collapsing.
Elena reached into Amy’s hand. Pressed something there. Her old silver locket. Amy stared down at it. Then back at her. “No.”
Elena smiled. “I know.” Then she leaned closer. And whispered—
“Stop surviving.”
Amy froze.
Elena stepped past her. Toward the farmhouse. Toward the old truck still sitting beside the barn. Amy immediately understood.
“No.”
Elena looked back one final time. Her voice was steady. Certain. “Get them home.” Then she climbed into the truck. The engine coughed once.
Then roared violently to life. Every walker in the pasture turned instantly. Amy stood frozen. The truck lurched forward. Straight toward the far tree line. Horn blaring. Headlights flashing. Drawing every single walker with it. The dead followed immediately. A river of bodies changing direction. Chasing noise. Chasing movement. Chasing Elena.
Behind Amy, Austin shouted— “The path is clear!” The wagons began moving.
George hurried to get tge smaller children into one of the carts, he then made sure his hockey pads were on tight and he started walking along the left side of the wagon train, his eyes continuously scanning where the horde had gone. He couldn't remember ever feeling as scared as he did in that moment, even with everything they had been through to this point.
The only thing that kept him moving, was protecting the kids...and seeing how Amythyst looked at him when no one was watching.
From his position of double checking that all the smaller kids were accounted for and safe and secure to getting the cattle moving, Dodger saw Elena and Amy in quiet, intense conversation and he knew what was happening. First Dante disappeared and now Elena was going to sacrifice herself to save to group. He wanted to shout and he did silently. Later when he was alone he would grieve properly for the one adult who hadn't disappointed or let them down but instead and given them a chance to live.
Slowly. One by one. The cattle pulling hard now. The children finally moving.
Amy couldn’t breathe. The truck disappeared beyond the trees.
The horn still screaming into the darkness. Then— Silence. Complete silence. Nobody spoke. The wagons rolled forward. Leaving Leah’s farm behind. Leaving the old world behind. Amy stared at the dark woods where the truck had vanished. Her fingers closed tightly around the silver locket. And somewhere deep inside— Something changed.
She wasn’t leading twenty children anymore. She was carrying someone’s final wish. She turned and looked at the group as they moved.
Then she grabbed the leads of the two remaining bulls and followed them down the dusty road.
