1,107 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Winter's hope
Location: Thea's cabin
Timeline: Current

Roman approached Thea's cabin pulling a wagon in it were some baby clothes the other women had made or donated. Just thinking of seeing Thea's reaction made him smile. She was kind, had a great sense of humor, smart, attractive and she made him feel good and it had been a long time since he had felt like that.

Arriving at her door he knocked and waited for her to answer. Maybe they could go for a short walk if she felt up to it.

It took Thea a couple of minutes to answer the door, as she did so she smiled warmly. “Hi Roman! Please come on in, it’s nice and cosy in here.”

He beamed at her, "Hi Thea. Thanks, I brought a few things I think you can use if not right now in the coming months." As he stepped into the warm and inviting cabin.

“Really?” Thea gave Roman a curious look. “You didn’t have to go getting things for me. Not that I don’t appreciate it.”

Roman smiled, ""Don't you understand? I know I don't have to, I want to. Helping you, seeing you happy makes me feel good and happy."

Thea smiled her cheeks flushing red with embarrassment. “I know, I just…I’m not used to it anymore. I’ve had to get used to being on my own.”

"I understand. Listen, if it will make you feel better, I can take all this stuff back and hide it around the complex and let you find it. You know like an Easter egg hunt." Roman teased, his eyes alight in merriment.

“Don’t you dare!” Thea grinned as she looked at what he was holding. “Please show me what you’ve got.”

"Just trying to help." Roman bantered. "As to what I brought, here have a look. "Some baby blankets, baby clothes that are gender neutral and.....for you some winter sweaters and a heavy coat."

“Oh wow!” Thea marvelled at everything she’d been given. Holding up some baby clothes she couldn’t help but smile. “These are amazing! Varying sizes too which will be a great help.”

Roman beamed. Seeing Thea happy, made him happy and he wasn't thinking as a doctor but as a man who loved a woman and wanted nothing but the best for her. "Good, in fact excellent. That is what I want to hear. You have some things as well."

“Oh wow!” Thea’s face lit up at the look of the clothes for her, she hadn’t had any new clothes in a while.

"You deserve them Thea and you will need them when the baby arrives." Roman replied smiling at seeing Thea's joy at the new clothes both for the baby and herself.

“It’s all so exciting now, but I do worry what life will be like bringing up a baby in these difficult times.” Thea offered. “But…I’m not going to dwell on that now.”

"You are going to do just fine Thea. I'll be here to assist you anyway I can as will the rest of the community. You won't be alone in this journey." Roman reassured her.

“Thank you” Thea smiled warmly. “Can I get you anything? A drink or a snack? I forgot to ask.”

Roman shook his head, "No, no thank you." He paused for a moment, his head dropped before raising it to look at Thea. "What I would like is to be part of your life, I don't mean as your doctor but on a more personal relationship."

Thea gave him a surprised look, not that it was really a surprise. In all honesty she liked Roman, and she needed to move on instead of holding onto the past. “Actually I…” she paused. “I’d like that.”

Roman's face broke into a relieve smile at hearing Thea's words. "Really? This is fantastic! You won't regret this. I promise you that." He then leaned forward and kissed her softly on her lips.

Thea was momentarily surprised, but she soon melted into the kiss letting it linger just a little. She couldn’t help but blush as their lips parted.

Roman smiled at her, "That was nice." He said noticing Thea's blush. "I think you liked it too. "I apologize if I surprised you."

“No, please…don’t apologise!” Thea gave Roman a worried glance. “I did enjoy it, if I don’t move on now I don’t think I ever really will. I don’t want to be alone anymore.”

Roman took her hand, "If you are agreeable. I would like to continue this journey with you. No one should be alone especially now. We face this new world together."

“I am more than agreeable” Thea nodded. “I would like that very much Roman.”

Roman beamed at Thea's comment. "That is wonderful! Fantastic! Thank you Thea. We'll get through this together."

Thea smiled at Roman’s enthusiasm. “I just hope that we get a chance to settle here, and we won’t end up being discovered by the walkers.”

"it would be nice if we could. This is a perfect place to start a new life. Quiet, peaceful and no walkers. I hope it stays like that ." Roman agreed.

“No doubt there’ll be more survivors too, we have to hope for the best.” Thea offered. “What about illnesses? There’s going to come a time when people get sick, how do we know what’s a threat and what isn’t?”

"I agree. If we're to make it, we need more survivors. As to illnesses, Dr. Reynolds and I are going to have to be on our toes to prevent any spread of any illness even the flu. So, people really need to take care of themselves. Bundle up, wash their hands. That sort of thing." Roman added.

Thea nodded. “I worry, but I know you'll look after us.”

Roman shook his head, "No, don't worry Thea but be aware of what is going on around you. As for taking care of you. Darn right I and Dr. Reynolds will."

Thea smiled warmly. “Then it’s good that I trust both of you, when the time comes I’ll need that trust.”

Roman took her hand and kissed it tenderly, "I will never betray your trust in me Thea nor will I let any harm come to you or the baby." He solemnly promised.

“I believe you” Thea smiled warmly. “I look forward to spending more time with you Roman.”

Roman beamed, "Thank you Thea, I look forward to us spending more time together and becoming much closer."
