Personality & Traits

Personal History Elena Marwick was once a quiet but accomplished woman from New England’s upper-class coastal society. Raised in Kennebunkport, she had a refined education, an eye for art and literature, and a reputation for kindness that made her well-liked even in circles known for their coldness. She married Charles Marwick, a well-connected investment manager whose family owned multiple island properties—including Hollow Rock, their “private escape.”

Their marriage was comfortable, at least from the outside. Behind closed doors, Charles was distant, meticulous about appearances, and allergic to responsibility that didn’t benefit him socially or financially. Elena spent years smoothing over his sharpness, convincing herself that love was supposed to look different for everyone.

Diagnosis & Betrayal

In early June 2010, Elena was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer, requiring urgent chemotherapy. She confided in Charles, expecting support. Instead, he panicked—not out of fear of losing her, but fear of the burden.

When the world began to crumble in July 2010, Charles saw an opportunity to abandon what he considered his “problem.”

He took Elena to Hollow Rock, telling her they’d “wait the chaos out” in safety. The first day was peaceful: ocean breeze, stocked pantry, solar lights humming. On the second morning, she woke to find him—and the boat—gone.

He left one note, scrawled quickly:

“I’m sorry. I can’t do this. The world is ending and I refuse to spend it watching you die.”

There were no medications, no transport, and only minimal supplies. Elena survived on rainwater, tinned food, and raw desperation.
